Autumn: Slower, but more intentional

As the air turns crisp and we reach for our blankets and jackets, there is no denying the shift in energy as the seasons change. We have officially passed the Autumn Equinox, and nature is providing us with a beautiful, visual reminder of the importance of transition.

From a holistic health perspective, Autumn is a pivotal time. Just as the trees shed their leaves to conserve energy for the coming winter, we too are invited to check in with our bodies and minds to see what we need to release and what we need to protect. What do you need to let go of to create more space for something more valuable to you?

Checking In with Your Health

Seasonal changes can sometimes be taxing on the physical body. Many of us have recently faced various seasonal illnesses that have been circulating. If your immune system has been under attack lately, your body may still be in a state of recovery, even if the primary symptoms have faded.

Autumn is the season to reinforce your internal defences. It is a time to nourish your system, replenish your energy stores, and ensure your "battery" is fully charged in preparation for winter.

The Art of Moving Slower (With Intention)

In our modern world, we are often pressured to maintain a high-speed "summer" pace year-round. However, Autumn (and winter) ask for something different: Mindfulness.

This doesn't mean stopping altogether; it means moving with more intention. It’s about:

  • Listening to the cues: Recognising when your body needs rest instead of pushing through.
  • Intentional Movement: Swapping some of the high-intensity for more grounding activities like walking in nature or gentle stretching.
  • Emotional Clearing: Identifying habits, thoughts, or commitments that no longer serve your well-being. By letting these go, you create the necessary space for new, healthier patterns to take root.
  • Making time for small joys and/or pleasures: Like reading a book with a hot cup of tea or your warm beverage; baking something wholesome, or whatever your cosier autumn activity is.
  • Time for mindfulness: Take a moment for meditation, prayer or being more intentional about a journaling practice.

Clients often tell me that they feel guilty about taking time for themselves. I encourage you to schedule time for undistracted, intentional, unhurried rest. Whether it is going for a 30-minute walk, blocking out some time to do crafts, 30 minutes of reading or meditation when you wake up or before you go to bed, or booking your reflexology treatment. You may not get to doing the above list every day or even every week. You may find yourself consistent and doing well one week and totally go off track the next; that’s okay – you may have to start multiple times again. Just keep at it as much as possible. Rest is important in being able to perform your best.

Many clients share that they feel a sense of guilt when taking time for themselves, but I want to encourage you to view rest differently - schedule moments of undistracted, unhurried stillness.

Whether it is a 30-minute walk in nature, dedicated time for a creative craft, a quiet chapter of a book, or a morning meditation before the day begins, these moments are important. They help slow life down a little bit and are essential for regulating your nervous system. This also includes the deep, restorative pause of a reflexology treatment.

Consistency isn't always linear. You might have a week where everything aligns perfectly, followed by a week where you feel completely off track. That is perfectly okay. Wellness is not a destination; it is a practice of starting again, as many times as you need to. Remember, intentional rest is not a luxury—it is the very foundation that allows you to show up and perform at your best.

How Therapeutic Reflexology Supports the Season

Reflexology is a powerful tool during this seasonal change. By working the reflex points on the feet, we can:

  1. Regulate Immune Function: Balancing the lymphatic system to help the body clear out toxins and lingering congestion.
  2. Ground the Nervous System: Helping you transition from the "doing" state of summer into the "being" state of autumn.
  3. Encourage Release: Much like the falling leaves, reflexology helps the body release physical and emotional tension, restoring balance (homeostasis).
